The library book sale during Beach Bash was a tremendous success, with over 1,000 books sold at $ 1 per bag. We had many browsers and buyers who were happy with their purchases. Four boxes of leftover paperbacks were given to the Cheboygan Sheriff’ s office for their jail library. Three boxes of hardcovers will be given to the Alpena Kiwanis Club for their annual book sale. These were older books, but some were duplicates of what we already have in stock.
A new mystery, The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon, is our July library purchase. This gripping historical novel is inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. A murder mystery, one suspect is found in the ice of the river. A layered thriller, Martha’ s diary becomes an integral part of the trial.
The book club met in July to discuss The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer, and overall highly recommended it, with an average rating of 4.75 out of 5. The book spans the generations of a woman who survived Nazi occupation and her daughter, granddaughter, and great-grandson who is a 7-year-old on the autism spectrum. Told from two points of view, we are able to hear“ Babcia’ s” story, along with its present day relationships and consequences. The granddaughter goes to Poland to get to the bottom of her grandmother’ s mystery, who is on her deathbed. All in all, very worth the read.
Our next book is a rom-com, The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies. Book Club will meet again on August 12 at 7 pm in the boardroom. All are welcome to attend or Zoom in! Happy reading!
CCR Ladies Auxiliary
All female members of Canada Creek Ranch are members of the Ladies Auxiliary and encouraged to attend the meetings on the first Wednesday of the month and make new friends. I hope you can attend our next meeting on August 6, 2025, at 10:30 am. Members of the Ladies Auxiliary run the gift shop and the library. Please check out the gift shop to see our merchandise. I would like to thank everyone who donated food and time to the memorial for Joan Ames. The food was delicious, and the family was thankful. I would also like to thank everyone who donated baked goods and those who bought items at the bake sale and the book sale during Beach Bash. This summer we are collecting trial size hygiene items for the“ Just in Case” project. This organization delivers hygiene items to schools in Montmorency County, for students in need. We have a box in the vestibule of the Ranch House to collect these items. We will be collecting them through September 3. On Wednesday, June 11, sixteen women attended the field trip to the Rockport Quarry, to hunt rocks and fossils. Many fossils were found, and we are considering a trip to another location to look for rocks. The next wine tasting will be on Tuesday, August 19, at 7:00 pm in the Bickley Room. The theme will be Red Varietals. The cost is $ 10.00 per person. We will provide the wine. We ask every couple to bring a dish for the charcuterie table. Please sign up at the Ranch House. We also have an ongoing food drive to benefit The Caring Place in Atlanta. There is a bin in the vestibule of the Ranch House where the food can be placed. If you have a large quantity of food to donate, please contact Julie McEwan at 989-785-5290 and she will pick it up from your residence. We are continuing our service project of collecting clean T shirts to make Produce Bags for the Atlanta Farmers Market. If you have any T shirts to donate to this ongoing project, please place them in the box in the vestibule of the Ranch House.
