Book Nook & News
By Rhonda Wetherington
CCR Book Club met this past month to discuss the novel Hello Beautiful with 9 people , 4 of whom had zoomed in . It was a lively discussion with polar opposite viewpoints and reviews . Positive reviews enjoyed the relationship of the sisters , the development of the characters , and the family dynamics in the book . Most enjoyed the themes of what constitutes family , the relationship between parents and children , and how control issues can ruin relationships . A major theme , grief and how differently people express it , was presented as something that ran throughout the novel . The symbolic elements and referrals to Alcott ’ s Little Women were ever present . Those who did not enjoy the book said it was formulaic or too soap-opera-like . Ratings ranged from 1.5 to 4.5 , but overall , the group average came to 3.5 .
Several interesting and different reads were presented by members to consider for the next read , with the group voting for Eruption by Michael Crichton and James Patterson . An unfinished manuscript from Crichton , who died before its publication , was completed by James Patterson . This thriller involves a massive volcanic eruption threatening Hawaii , but a decades-old military secret poses an even greater danger .
The Book Club will meet again on Tuesday , February 11 , 7 pm in the boardroom ! A zoom link will also be posted ! All are welcome !
Eruption is also a new purchase for our CCR library and added to our James Patterson collection . Also All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker will be on the shelves as something new . This novel is a missing person mystery , a serial killer thriller , and a love story , with a unique twist on each . A daughter of a wealthy family is targeted , and the most unlikely hero emerges — Patch , a local boy , who leaves heartache in his wake .
Happy reading in these cold winter months !
