2021 CCR Calendar
DEATH NOTICE
By the time you are reading this column, all of the 2020 CCR
calendars will have been sold out. This tells me that people
like having a Ranch calendar, therefore, I am now ready to
start collecting photos for the 2021 Ranch calendar!
Fr. Michael Joseph Howell
February 11, 1937 - October 27, 2019
Michael Joseph. Howell, born of the love of Clara (Mager)
and Henry in the railroad town of Ottawa, Kansas, on
February 11, 1937, came with his parents to Michigan’s water
wonderland at the end of “The Great Depression” to grow
up in and around the farm town of St. Johns.
Michael attended St Joseph Catholic Grade School staffed
by the Sisters of St. Joseph and graduated from Rodney B.
Wilson Public High School in 1956. After three years of
college he entered the seminary getting a B.A. from Mount
St. Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a masters from
St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. Send your favorite CCR photos, 12 pixels or more, to me at
this address: mjwood@src-milp.com Each year the number
of photos that my committee and I receive is growing! When
we first started making calendars, we would get around 35
to 50 photos that were emailed to me. This past year we
received more than 160 photos! My photo choosing friends
came to my home and we went over all of the photos again
and again, trying to whittle down our choices to only 15 pho-
tos. What a job when there were so many excellent photos
from which to choose! I thank Sheryle Benson, Lorna and
Tom Tarman for helping me choose from our large 2020 col-
lection!
He served for years as a deacon at St. John’s Church, Davison,
Michigan. After ordination to the priesthood in 1969 he
served in St. Paul’s Parish, Owosso; St. Charles Parish,
Coldwater; St. Joseph Parish, Battle Creek; St. Rose of Lima
Parish, Hastings; and then as chaplain at the Kalamazoo
Regional Psychiatric Hospital; concluding his years of
ministry as chaplain at the Motherhouse for the Sisters of
Joseph, Nazareth. Send us your photos that are clear and interesting. Unfortu-
nately, we don’t wish to have photos of your family reunion
or your beautiful grandchild smiling at the camera. That is
one direction we do not want to go! We have in the past,
however, used two photos of children whose faces were not
seen - a sort of “generic” photo of children enjoying the Ranch
and those photos were not placed on one of the months.
EVERYONE PREFERS scenery and wildlife!
I thank everyone who participated for the 2020 calendar!
Please continue to send your photos to me and please in-
clude the name of the person who took the photo! If you
have any questions, comments or suggestions, contact me,
Marion Wood at 989-785-2996.
God has given Michael many good people with whom to
travel his years of faith into ever deeper wisdom and grace.
For all of you he gives praise to God and to you he says
Thanks for so much giving to the quality of his life. God is
good!
Friends and Family will be received at 7:00 pm at 2929
Nazareth Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49048 Friday, November 1,
2019, where a wake will be held. Mass of Christian Burial
will take place 1:30 Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Nazareth.
November CCR Shooters Corner
It’s finally here. The firearms deer season starts Friday
November 15. Be sure to get your rusty/dusty rifle out and
clean it up for sight-in days on the Rifle Range November
13 th and 14 th 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be CCR Range officers
there to help you get that pea shooter zeroed in on that 30
point buck you’ve been seeing in the hunting area this fall.
Library Corner
Looking forward to seeing you and your shooting iron on
the range.
November is here and we have two terrific books for
you this month.
The Shooting Sports Committee
First we have Rival’s Break by Carla Neggers. This is a
Sharpe and Donavan novel. Emma Sharpe is still
recovering from the death of her father as she and her
husband Collin head to Maine for the wedding of Collin’s
brother Andy. During the reception Collin’s brother
Kevin is called to a yacht for a case of food poisoning.
You will learn a great deal about mushrooms and other
toxic agents. It’s a good read and will keep you guessing.
Remember: Safety First Always
Thanks!
I would like to thank the staff and Brian for their help in
selling the hunting badges.
All I did was drop off the badges and they took it from
there. They put forth the extra effort beyond
Our second book is One Good Deed by David Baldacci.
The year is 1949 and Aloysius Archer has just been
released from prison. Our hero is a bit of a do gooder
that is usually rewarded with negative consequences.
He can’t seem to catch a break. He needs to find a job,
stay out of trouble and meet with his parole officer. Two
out of three isn’t so bad. Or is it. Find out all the trouble
Aloysius gets up to.
There normal duties to help with the fundraiser for the
conservation committee. Please feel free to thank them
for their extra effort as with out there help this effort
would have failed.
As usual it is those in the trenches that are responsible
for success.
