PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Raymond Karbon
President Raymond Karbon gave the following report : What an unusual year ! Our General Manager ’ s first 12 months on the job have certainly been exciting . He ’ s building a strong and effective team , even in the face of employment challenges . It is our good fortune to have a person of Brian ’ s skill and integrity at the helm of our Club ’ s operations . Our entire staff has done an admirable job during this pandemic , dealing patiently and effectively with
13 the related government restrictions on our operations while exhibiting a pleasant and helpful presence to our members . Matching this attitude , our members have shown a measure of patience and willingness to help one another that is in the best spirit of enduring fellowship expressed in our Mission Statement .
The first year of implementing our Strategic Plan has been very successful . The Plan is built around a model of continuous improvement that starts with Planning , then Implementing the Plan , then Evaluating the Results , and then making Adjustments to what we learn from the evaluation . This model encourages a perpetual cycle intended to improve all the Board ’ s processes . At every Board meeting a significant amount of time is devoted to a strategic focus on the Club ’ s future . This is a proper role of the Board , and one of the most important it must perform . Special thanks and recognition are due Director Mark Smith . In his role as the Lead Director for Strategic Planning , Mark has kept this Plan on track . Important goals have been completed and new goals are constantly being identified and the Plan is updated accordingly . Please take the time to read the entire Plan on our website .
The implementation of some aspects of our Strategic Plan have been impacted by the Corona virus and the government mandated shutdown that remains partially in force as of this writing . The related restrictions imposed on our movements and how we are allowed to conduct ourselves are reminders how fragile our freedom is and how easily it can be curtailed .
It is no exaggeration to say we ’ re living in turbulent and troubling times – economically , socially , and politically .
In sharp contrast to the turmoil we see all about us today , our Club continues to provide a sense of peacefulness and stability our members can count on to help them preserve a sense of balance and provide their families and guests a safe and restful haven .
But even in – or especially in – times of trouble , it ’ s important for us to pause and look back , as hindsight shows us how far we ’ ve come . Hindsight also reminds us how quickly good fortunes can change .
As we enjoy the benefits of Ranch membership , we cannot assume everything will continue as it is now without a significant effort from all of us to preserve , protect , and defend this retreat we care so much about . In particular , the Club ’ s ongoing financial sustainability is going to need our attention .
My monthly President ’ s Messages have detailed the story of CCR ’ s economic rollercoaster – riding high in the mid- 1970s with a $ 5.6 million cash infusion from oil exploration and then hitting bottom just a few years later in 1990 , when we couldn ’ t pay our monthly bills ! I ’ ve also applauded the business expertise , legal resolve , and unwavering persistence of the Boards and supportive Members who rallied to overcome that dark period . As a direct result of
the smart work of those good people our finances were Continued on page 14
