September 2020

Welcome to September! We already have seen slightly
lower temperatures and I’m sure that we will be hearing
the elk bugle and the trees turning colors soon. This all
means one thing that is on many of our member’s minds,
HUNTING SEASON! While the September Elk Season
doesn’t happen on CCR’s property, I do know many
members are out guiding for those folks that have pulled
the “golden ticket” for harvesting a Northern Michigan
elk. Congrats to those members that have already taken
their animal and good luck to those that still have this
daunting task helping someone with their hunt of a
lifetime. I want to remind everyone of the following items.
CCR has brought back the small game and deer hunting
badges for three purposes; the first and foremost is
tradition, the second is data tracking, and the third is
field and food plot funding. Please plan on obtaining this
badge from the office prior to heading out to hunt. The
annual deer hunting badge price for members is $10.00.
The annual fishing / small game badge is $10.00 as well.
If you choose to obtain your fishing / small game, deer
and shooting sports badges at the same time, the cost is
$25.00.
Please be respectful and courteous sportsmen and women
when placing your blinds. Safety is and should be
everyone’s number one priority. Look for other blinds in
your area and be sure to scout it well in advance for both
your safety and your fellow members. As a reminder, the
current rule requires all artificial materials and blinds to
be removed from the property no later than March 1, 2021.
For many of our members, your best opportunity is to
have it removed before we receive large amounts of
snowfall. This is one of the top rule violations that the
Safety & Security Committee receives.
Recently, I have had a few conversations regarding docks
not following the guidelines listed in Rule 2.05. Since
CCR owns this strip of property around most of CCR’s
lakes, all members and their guests can utilize any dock
around the lakes. Please remember that a member who
currently owns, or has installed, a dock accepts the
responsibility of maintenance, safety and liability. All
members must report being an owner of a dock to CCR
and label the dock properly with their Member number.
If you do not have your Member number on your dock,
our Team will do our due diligence to find out who it
belongs too, but if we are unable to do so, it may be

removed. Any unclaimed docks shall become the sole
property of CCR. Additionally, if you would like to install
a new dock, it must be with approval by the Board of
Directors. This comes with the possibility of having an
EGLE (formally known as DEQ) permit.
Another conversation that has came up is boat stickers.
Please remember that if you have a rowboat, kayak,
canoe, paddleboat, paddleboard or any other watercraft
on CCR’s shoreline or at Tibbit’s Landing, it must be
identified with a CCR boat sticker. Boat stickers are free
of charge and can be obtained at the Office. Watercraft
that do not have a sticker may be removed by the Ranch
Team and retained for a fee per Rule 17.04. Additionally,
please make sure all your watercraft are removed from
the shorelines and Tibbit’s Landing no later than
November 15 as stated in Rule 17.03.
The final reminder I want to provide is specifically for
cabin owners and homeowners. Some of you may not be
aware that building permits are required for any
modification to your dwelling. The Montmorency County
Building Department has been in contact with me
regarding individuals choosing to reroof their homes,
build decks, and complete other projects without pulling
proper County or Township permits. CCR itself requires
a building permit to be pulled anytime a County or
Township permit is needed. This requirement is not only
listed in Rule 8.01, but is a requirement in Article IV,
Section E and F of the CCR By-Laws. While I always
attempt to work with our members regarding Rules and
Policies, By-Laws are very difficult to deviate from. It is
the Member’s responsibility to abide by all CCR Building
Codes and Governmental Codes, the contractor you hire
is not the individual that is risking a CCR By-Law
violation. Please make sure that if you hire a contractor
that all building permits are pulled prior to starting
construction or reroofing. If you ever have questions if
you should pull a permit, do not hesitate to contact me at
(989) 785 - 4201, the Montmorency County Building
Inspector at (989) 785 – 8005 or the Montmorency
Township Zoning Administrator at (989) 742- 3619.
With the upcoming seasons, I wish you all great health
and good luck on those hunting spots. Take care my
friends!
