Robert E. Meyer
Robert Ernest Meyer, age 100, of Canada Creek
Ranch, died at home on Monday November 11, 2019
just about a month short of his 101st birthday. The
son of Karl and Freda (Bergmann) Meyer, Robert was
born on December 14, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York
where he was raised and eventually graduated from
the Pratt Institute of Engineering. Blessed with 55
years of marriage at the time of her death in 1997,
Bob married the love of his life, Eileen Anderson, in
Brooklyn on July 4, 1942. He later married Willabelle
Clark and after her death, Joan Johnson.
Proud and patriotic, Bob wanted to serve his country,
so he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
During his time with the U.S. Navy, Bob and Eileen
lived in several places throughout the United States,
their three children were born, and Bob ascended
in the ranks becoming a Full Navy Commander. After
the Korean War Bob moved the family to Michigan
where he took a job with General Motors working
as a mechanical engineer, joined the Navy Reserves,
and was placed in charge of the Navy battalion
located at the Detroit Armory. After 25 years with
General Motors, Bob retired and moved from Shelby
Township to his home at Canada Creek Ranch.
Civic-minded and very involved in community, Bob
was a longtime member of the Lions Club, Masons,
Shriners, the Board of Directors at Canada Creek
Ranch, and American Legion Post 0201. He loved
golfing with the guys, watching games shows, and
adding to his incredible collection (started in 1942)
of Lionel trains. He loved the beauty and solitude of
the woods, living at the Ranch, and helping anyone
in need. Well-liked, Bob was very friendly, easy to
talk with, and had a kind heart. Truly an amazing
man, Bob remained active - golfing until he was 97
years old and collecting donations for the Shriners
until he was 96 years old. His great outlook on life,
his love for his family, friends, and fellow man, and
his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest
touched our hearts and will remain fondly in our
memories of Bob.
Surviving Bob is his wife, Joan Johnson-Meyer of
Canada Creek Ranch; son, Robert Ernest Meyer, Jr.
of Canada Creek Ranch; and daughters, Elizabeth
“Bette” (Robert) Bartley of Shelby Township and
Canada Creek Ranch and Barbara Vago (Carl Sens)
of Sterling Heights; as well as nine grandchildren,
many great grandchildren, and several great, great
grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his
wife, Eileen; his second wife, Willabelle “Willy ”(2009);
brother, William Meyer; and sister, Lillian Cates.
Cremation arrangements are in care of the Chagnon
Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at
the Canada Creek Ranch House next spring. Those
planning an expression of sympathy please consider
a donation in memory of Bob to Shriners Hospital
for Children at www.donate.lovetotherescue.org or
to the Canada Creek Ranch Endowment Fund.
