Eleven book club members met in May to discuss James by Percival Everett, a parallel rendition to Mark Twain’ s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from Jim’ s point of view. All club members highly recommend this read, which recently won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Many themes were discussed, such as race, revenge, and justice, but a main theme was the educated diction of James and the learning to dumb down to stay under the white man’ s radar. Though in conflict with Twain’ s ideas of dialect, the supposition that this could be so, or at least partially so, is one that Everett wants us to consider. The book was rated by the members as a nearly perfect 5, and if you get a chance to read it, please do.
Other books mentioned as read this month, due to the postponed April meeting because of the ice storm, were The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Hold Strong by Robert Dugoni, Sandwich by Catherine Newman, and The Bridesmaid by Beverly Lewis.
The club members picked a nonfiction book for May, entitled A Walk in the Park: The True Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon by Kevin Fedarko. The book won the 2024 National Outdoor Book Award in Outdoor Literature and the 2025 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. An immersive account of the challenges of the grueling 750- mile hike, two novices work their way through the Canyon, documenting the hazards and beauty. We hope to see you next month on June 10 at 7 pm to talk about it in the Ranch House boardroom.
In addition, the library has ordered Flags on the Bayou by James Lee Burke, a suspense novel, which won the 2024 Edgar Award. Set in 1863 when Louisiana was under Union occupation, it tells the story of an escaped slave accused of murder and the abolitionist who runs away with her. Meeting a combat surgeon who has returned to his uncle’ s plantation, the novel is action packed and full of the lush bayou scenery.
The library also has many DVDs to choose from and great reference and hobby books regarding nature and shooting / fishing sports. Come and take a gander!
Enjoy the beginning of summer with a good book!
