Everyone has heard the phrase“ It takes a village”, well it“ took a ranch”( CCR to be specific) to teach the Hunter Safety Education Class held the last few days of July 2025. The class was very successful thanks in part to all of the volunteer ranch members who pitched in to teach various portions of the class, including certified Hunter Safety Education instructors; Paul Cichon, Jane Gordon, Ralph Mayer, Jack Schaible and Instructor in training Mike Krupnick. Other instructors who helped out included; Alice Abbe, Tom Ames, Tom Arnold, Bob Babushka, Bruce Debouvre, Janet Edwards, Vicki Hatch, Alleigh Pagels, Kathy & Jim Powell, Sue Schymanski, and Donna Sleep. Chef Chuck and his staff did an outstanding job providing hot lunches for everyone all three days of class. The instructors are also grateful to the Housekeeping staff for setting up the Bickley room and keeping it clean during the class. Thanks also goes out to the Tai Chi class for giving up their space in the Bickley room on Wednesday and Friday so the class could be held.
CCR is happy to hold the Hunter Safety Education class each year offering it to the community as well as CCR members. This year approximately two-thirds of the students were from the surrounding area and had no personal ties to CCR. There were students and their families that stayed in Onaway at hotels and others that camped at Clear Lake State Park for the duration of the class. Students attended the class from as far away as Grayling, Kalkaska, Marion, Cheboygan, and of course Atlanta. The students were able to shoot. 22 rifles and shotguns and practiced their skills on the archery range. They also learned how to track deer, how to use a compass, the basics of first aid, and how to start a survival fire without using matches. The class was definitely a success as all 33 students passed both the written and gun handling portions of the test.
The instructors would like to thank the CCR Ladies Auxiliary and Whitetails Unlimited for their monetary donations to the class. Instructor Paul Cichon donated compasses for each one of the students and Jays Sporting Goods in Gaylord also provided targets and hunter orange hats. It certainly“ takes a ranch” to put on a quality program and the instructors are so very grateful that we have a community that helps when needed. The Hunter Safety Education program is always looking for volunteers willing to help out so if you are interested please contact the ranch office. Thanks again and see you next year!
